    Full Name of the Resource : Mammalian, invertebrate, plant and fungal lipoxygenases

    Brief Description : Due to their involvement in several diseases like cancer, inflammation, fever or arthritis, a lot of research is done on lipoxygenases yielding information about sequence, structure and function of these proteins. The LipOXygenases-DataBase (LOX-DB) is an effort to combine and cross-link these informations and the related literature in one database and make it available via the internet. The main focus of LOX-DB is on mammalian lipoxygenases, but it also contains invertebrate, plant and fungal lipoxygenases. Primary data like protein sequences, physiological data, references and spatial protein structures are imported from other databases [SwissProt/TrEMBL,GenBank,PDB,PubMed] or extracted from the literature. Furthermore, LOX-DB contains a variety of computationally-derived data: For sequence comparison of LOX subfamilies, multiple sequence alignments have been generated using the CLUSTALW software. Since experimentally solved 3D structures are available for only three lipoxygenases, the 3D structures of several other entries were generated applying a comparative approach to model homologous proteins using the MODELLER software.
